DNA and the Night Shift

A new study has found that night shift work is associated with diminished ability to repair DNA. The connection between suppressed melatonin levels and DNA repair is just another example of the harmful effects of blue light at night.

Edison’s invention of the light bulb conquered the night, or so we thought. Now, the night seems to be striking back. On almost a regular basis, we see headlines extolling the harmful effects of artificial light at night. “Your smartphone is making you fat!” says one headline. “Light at night is contributing to the diabetes epidemic and increases your chance of heart attacks!” says another. “Working at night increases your chance of getting breast or prostate cancer by over 50%, and if you do get a cancer, the wrong light will prevent the chemotherapy from working.” A map of light at night exposure in Israel correlates with the map of increased rates of breast cancer in Israel. 

To make matters worse, exposure to the wrong light at night can lead to depression and mood disorders.

Research is showing that nights are a key part of human health.

The largest study ever done on diabetes levels around the world revealed last year that the global cost of diabetes has reached $825 billion. Exposure to blue light at night has been found to increase the risk of obesity and diabetes - and with the rise of conventional LEDs in recent years, part of the increased diabetes cost could be due to increased blue light exposure.

The Health Problem with LEDs

Most LED and fluorescent lights on the market today increase obesity, diabetes, heart disease risks, and reproductive problems and cause up to a 50-65% higher rate of breast cancer, prostate cancer, and gastrointestinal cancer when used in the late evening or at night. Mounting medical evidence shows they provide too much Bio-Active Blue during the night, and too little during the day, leading to circadian rhythm disruption, mood and health disorders and low productivity.
